How I found myself papering the bathroom

Hygroscopic bathroom

Early prototyping, testing transient hygrothermal performance analysis with extremes of moisture. Research requires double-loop learning and real-world collaboration.

It’s 2013 and I’m papering my bathroom the year after we had moved into our new home.

We spent 12 weeks preparing the house for our arrival, getting things done that would be trickier once we were in. I then spent the best part of a year building my own bathroom, for great pleasure and personal satisfaction as well as further developing my practical skills.

This was to be no ordinary bathroom.

These photos document the work on the bathroom Thursday 24th May 2012 – Thursday 21st March 2013

Temperature and humidity results below.

January 2014 – Bathroom test

Green – Humidity
Yellow – Temperature
Interstitial – behind 50mm of Hemp and Lime, in front of 215mm late Victorian clay brick, at the top of a room, above a bath and shower.

January 2014 - Bathroom test

Dark green – peaks of internal humidity each time the shower is used.
Light green – amplified interstitial humidity buffering peaks and regulation moisture
(Sensor located behind 50mm IWI hemp-lime on 215mm Victorian clay brick

Temperature and humidity monitoring by Pier Sadler Consulting.

No internal moisture build-up, interstitial condensation. Internal humidity is regulated.

Data files are available on application.
